Who knew it was Washington, and not Lincoln, from whom all our troubles flow…

Oh, don't worry, Lincoln's still a troublemaker to L. Neil Smith, who has him murder John Wilkes Booth for some reason and Jeff Davis is a beloved president. Also Ayn Rand was the first president on the moon. Anyways it's pretty telling that his vision of wacky anarchist utopia America is just more technologically advanced capitalism and also everyone has lots of extra guns everywhere. There's even a comic! (y'know, for kids...)
The Tea Bagger heroes of Philadelphia simply blew off Article XIII of the then US constitution, the Articles of Confederation.

Everything they did or even aspired to do at Philadelphia was unconstitutional and unlawful.

I doubt our blowhard patriots know and I know they don't care.

Like liberty and freedom, the constitution is just a vacuous rallying cry for the more stupid and deranged of the right wingers.

They would crown a military dictator wrapped in the flag and burning a cross on the White House lawn to overthrow every achievement of 20th and 21st Century progressivism, all the while chanting they were saving the constitution, libert, and freedom.

That's them.

The real Americans.

Your remarks are especially compelling for me. My wife and I just returned from several weeks touring the Greek Isles, Turkey, and at last Rome itself. The ruins that fill those lands - one magnificent structure layered on another - are poignant reminders of the length of time those civilizations endured. Rome expecially impressed me: a republic for centuries that in the space of a generation devolved into dictatorship. Makes you think.
