Today, I went to the beach front with my children.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She
put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.

She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I
had to tell someone!

[...] But this? This bothers me. It's an interesting post, with important historical points, but it still aggressively dodges the most sophisticated definition of "singularity" in order to riff on straw-man irrelevancies.
Thanks for this fabulous post. The story of the sniper prompted me to recall the story of my son's German school exchange scheme, which dates from 1948 (the oldest in the UK), set up by the then headmaster, who had served in WW1.

During a battle he had put his head above the parapet, to find himself looking at a German rifle pointed at him from the opposite trench. He could have been shot instantly, but the German looked at him and laid his gun to one side. What goes around comes around; after WW2, learning that a former pupil of his was stationed in Hamburg, he asked them to visit the schools until he found one to which Latymer School, in London, "could extend the hand of friendship".

I find this story unbearably moving whenever it comes to mind.

You may also be interested in a post I wrote about a libretto my brother wrote on The Christmas Truce. It seems the football story probably isn't true, but the truth is more resonant: on Christmas Eve 1914 the Germans started singing carols to the British soldiers, and then invited them to respond: "yout turn, Tommy".
