We must beef up our sciences big time. We should have colonies on the moon by now. And can't anybody talk some sense into McCain about how temperatures rise first, and THEN carbon-dioxide levels rise. Carbon-dioxide doesn't cause warming, warming causes CO2 levels to rise.
.
absurd thought -
God of the Universe says
humans' breath is poison

just one child hurts the world
worse than a jet engine

JayCee raises a valid point. A lot of the money's still there; you just can't get it unless you're willing to work on what we (myself and the group of students who worked on Army research in grad school) called baby-killer grants. It's all homeland security and defense; there's almost no money anywhere else.

Even less reassuring is my own personal experience on said baby-killer grant, when we told an Army research rep that to complete their project to their specs, light would have to go faster than, well, the speed of light. His response: "Oh, do you need more money?"

I have not done military research since, and will never do it again. I'm disgusted enough that it paid for one of my graduate degrees.

I suspect that not all science is being shortchanged. My son works in a lab experimenting with technology that has both homeland security and healthcare applications. Guess which is being generously funded? It doesn't hurt that the funding is to a university in a less populated red state with rural Senators that need kowtowed to.
